Founders
The Morton Center was established on April 1, 1984 by co-founders Jane Morton Norton and John P. Walsh. The Center was named in memory of Mrs. Norton’s brother, Kentucky United States Senator Thruston B. Morton. Mr. Walsh, The Morton Center’s Chief Executive Officer, has been in the drug and alcohol field for nearly 30 years. His varied experiences include working in inpatient settings, detoxification units, traditional outpatient, transitional living and the development of intensive outpatient programs. Mr. Walsh has developed a philosophy and recovery model that is well-known throughout the recovery community nationwide. He is asked to speak to civic groups; high school and college students; churches and health professionals in medicine, social work, psychology and education. Besides overseeing the day-to-day activities of The Morton Center, Mr. Walsh remains active in clinical work. He maintains an active counseling practice and has personally conducted well over 400 interventions on behalf of the families, friends and business associates of the chemically dependant.
